VIBART, Henry Meredith (1839 - 1917.) (Charles Francis Le Hardy.) MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK WITH EXTENSIVE AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL NOTES + LIFE OF HIS FATHER IN LAW LIEUTENANT COLONEL CHARLES FRANCIS LE HARDY (1802 - 1862.) About 1907. Leather bound notebook with legible, closely written notes on about 170 pages. The first part is a life of Charles Francis le Hardy about 3000 words over 30 pages. He was the descendant of an old Jersey family and served in India (where he put down the insurrection in Canara with the help of the Coorgs of whom he was a great champion) and there is much detail of his time there, especially 3 years in the Muggur Division. There follows a pedigree of Ltnt Colonel Le Hardy forebears from 1349 to Vibarts marriage to his daughter in 1884. There are other notes and journal entries after this before a 90 page memoir of Henry Meredith Vibart who had married Le Hardy's daughter Louisa in 1884. Although the memoir of Vibart is written in the third person there is no doubt that he is the author of it. In an earlier journal note he refers to a stay in Harrogate in 1893 and writes "I wrote book on Addiscombe..." and later mentions taking the MSS to the publisher. Vibart's large book "Addiscombe its heroes and men of note" was published in 1894 by Constable with an introduction by Lord Roberts of Kandahar. In a journal entry for June 1902 he records an Addiscombe dinner 'Lord Roberts presided - I gave the toast...' Vibart's account of his own life over 90 pages (about 10000 words) covers service as a colonial military officer in the Royal Engineers and travel in India and has events such as the Indian St Leger, travels in the Himalayas, Hyderabad, Bangalore etc., There is good account of the visit of the Prince of Wales to Bombay and Calcutta in 1875 and his writing of a book in 1881 (see below) of which the first copy was sent to the Prince. There are separate very detailed accounts of travels and meetings / events in Britain and Europe and a list of every trip to India. Vibart wrote several books inc 'The Military History of the Madras Engineers and Pioneers, from 1743 up to the present time' in 2 volumes in 1881 and a life of Sir Harry Prendergast in 1914. He also wrote a life of Richard Baird Smith the leader of the Delhi Heroes of 1857 which was published 1897. This notebook contains much unpublished material especially regarding Vibart's life of which there is no other published account or source. Very good condition with some light wear and rubbing at edges and head of spine. A30448 £550
