RACKHAM, Arthur. IMPORTANT SIGNED 4 PAGE LETTER TO FLORA ANNIE STEEL AUTHOR OF ENGLISH FAIRY TALES. 1917. An important and revealing 4 page letter to Flora Annie Steel (1847 - 1929) whose English Fairy Tales (Macmillan 1918) was illustrated by Rackham. Mostly very legible, it reads:16 Chalcot Gardens, N.W.3 14 Dec 17. /Dear Mrs Steel. I never had a pleasanter afternoon or felt sadder than after it. And it isn't helped by the great fear I have that I was dolt enough to put you onto a wrong bus. On a nasty dark foggy evening in this horrible town. You have no right to forgive me for that any how. /You see, my dear Mrs Steel, an illustrator cannot always choose. He jumps, then , at a chance that touches his very nature. Book after book I do in which just a few, here and there, chances I get. And the rest needs all my fortitude. I have to call on myself as a husband and father....... recognition that as fine a work can be made of a young man and maid in a wall conservatory as a tinker in a hollow tree- & I face it , & - - get paid for it. /I yearn to draw a warped little hurdy gurdy man, you open glorious doors to Orpheus and Pan. Nothing less than Apollo for you - the sun God. /Oh well - fortitude again, Rackham please. Needs must. In a recent letter to my wife I said I would not draw whitewashed stepmothers and choice cultured versions of little mud covered variants of Cinderella. I said I could not. And she wrote that I must not. And she is (or was) an artist too. And I am a Goth and a creature of tradition - perplexed only by rennaissances. It's the wear and tear, the years of experience that I can draw - and the ideas. / And again this morning I got a little letter from my wife urging me to be an artist. In her own writing - lately it has had to be a maids.......but it's a case of must. I've got to , that's all. For nearly two years now my wife and I have been waiting, never knowing how far off Death is standing. They cannot tell us. ........I have once found her unable to move, unable to speak , her face distracted - death almost came that time. Thank heavens she has recovered from that fully, even all her looks, but strength does not come. Until it comes or whether it will come they cannot tell us- nor do anything .........I have no right to say this to you . It's my own private business. And who hasn't their troubles at this time ? Indeed, you have, you told me of it. /But you want to give me the soul, the fine cause & inspiration of these folk tales. Well, I tell you, I must illustrate what you give me. But I shall debase it - to any finer sensibility that is. Oh I shall be good enough to deceive most people but I cannot draw the soul. I can only draw the outward, twisted and brave and humorous body - the consequence, not the cause. One may read one in the other, no doubt, I hope, anyhow. /And where a story comes, lacking a limb, it is sometimes quite possible to replace it -- necessary, often, to supply a crutch of sorts. But in these tales, so much is taken for granted by each reader - each in his own way supplies, realises, the magic link. I don't think there is need to be too explicit, to embroider. /But there's no need to say more of my conversation, you know what I hoped for. Jacobs in short tried to do it but he hadn't the gift. And you have. These stories are. But they stumble. That's all. / I am reading from my copies of Jacobs with his notes. / Also a few notes of my own, which will not take you long. /With kindest regards (Faithfully?) Arthur Rackham. /P.S. I am aware of one thing. That is, spoiled by the printing-press, I can not form a fair judgment of manuscript. It sounds absurd. But as it is how can I do myself (even respectably) what I want you to do (superbly.) I tried it in the Rose Tree (i "Little Brother and Little Sister" - my this year's vol of Grimm.) and in M.S. I thought I hadn't done it well but..when I saw it in print, it is awful. Partly perhaps because of my ignorance of paragraphing and punctuation - but it is bad in other ways, there's no blinking the fact. Therefore, I know how prone to error I am in my judgment- particularly of M.S. And arrogant as you may want to think me. I am not really. There follow 4 heavily croosed out lines with a few words discernible (folk tales....I would just as soon as have a banjo for David and God creating the world in the commencement...playing the banjo.' Note: Jacobs = Joseph Jacobs (1854 - 1916, noted folklorist, from 1890 to 1912 he edited five collections of fairy tales: English Fairy Tales, More English Fairy Tales, Celtic Fairy Tales, More Celtic Fairy Tales, and European Folk and Fairy Tales.) 'M.S.' probably refers to Midsummer Night's Dream. AR's wife Edyth Starkie (1867 - 1941) was a considerable portrait painter in her own right, although always delicate she outlived him by 2 years. They lived in Hampstead in a Voysey house (now with blue plaque) with a studio for each of them. They had met over the garden wall in 1897 when Edyth and her mother had a studio next to Arthur Rackham in Hampstead at 3 Wynchcombe Studios. Mrs Steel lived another 12 years in Minchinghampton, Gloucestershire - possibly where she had been heading when Rackham put her on the wrong bus. In black ink on good quality 10 inches by 8 blue writing paper with hand written Hampstead address. V sl fading, sl browning to edges, some mild bleed through to the other side of the paper from heavy inking; thin unobjectionable old tape at top of middle page and top of rear page from where it was extracted from a book, overall vg+.
