MARCK (MARK OF LEYDEN) Johannes (Johannis / Leiden) MARK'S MEDULLA. (MARKII MEDULLA / CHRISTIANAE THEOLOGIAE MEDULLA DIDACTICO-ELENCTICA) MANUSCRIPT OF A TRANSLATION INTO ENGLISH. Late 18th Century? Bound vellum notebook with an anonymous translation in English of 4 chapters of Marck's magnum opus. Neatly inked on the spine are the words 'Translation of Mark's Medulla.' 90 leaves with handwritten translation recto only with an occasional note facing, over 20,000 words. Neatly and legibly written in an easy to read sloping hand. I can find no record of a published English translation of Marck's work. It may be a condensation or a partial translation as the 1690 Amsterdam Latin original (in 12mo) appears to have been around 300 pages. The last (and fourth) chapter 'Of God' seems to suggest a conclusion, at least by the English translator. The text has many unfavourable pieces about 'papists', many references to biblical passages and the translator writes out the occasional word or phrase in Hebrew and Greek. His language suggest the 18th century with occasional words like 'hath' and 'sayeth' although such expressions did persist into the 19th century, particularly in a religious context. Marck (sometimes known as Johannes à Marck) 1656-1731, lived and died in Leyden and is variously described as a Dutch Covenanter or Neo-Calvinist. His theological work was taught in British universities, there is a reference online to Dr. Archibald Bruce at the University of Glasgow and "a lecture by the Professor, in Latin, on the system of Theology, using Markii Medulla (a treatise on Systematic Theology by the celebrated Mark of Leyden) as a text-book." It is suggested this would have been a lecture attended by the Irish / American reformer Alexander Campbell (1788 - 1866). He was at the university in 1809. 7 inches by 5 vellum notebook with good quality laid paper, the vellum is evenly and quite darkly soiled with slight chipping at the spine hinges but is overall in very good condition, sound and internally very clean.
