EDMUND B V CHRISTIAN. A SHORT HISTORY OF SOLICITORS. Reeves & Turner, London, First Edition. Hardback. xiv, 255pp. 8vo (7.5 x 5 inches). Midnight blue publisher's cloth gilt. Spine very slightly cocked, slight rubbing, otherwise sound, clean, decent condition without blemish. One previous ownership inscription on front pastedown, neat. The product of the last days of Victorian England, when quaint histories were written about everything from kings to cabbages. It was penned by one Edmund Christian, who advertises himself on the title page as a Bachelor of Laws, and published by Reeves & Turner, ‘Law Publishers and Booksellers', of Chancery Lane in the legal heart of the City of London. Mr Christian states his aim as being ‘not an apology for the profession, but a brief record of its development'. Thus, the book's eight chapters proceed from ‘the origin and early history of attorneys', through the nature of law men in Elizabethan and Jacobean England, into the origins of ‘solicitors' in the mid-seventeenth century ‘who, like the grasshoppers in Egypt, devour the whole land'. From there we go through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, guided by the themes of regulation, taxation, conveyancing, education and – the great preoccupation – remuneration. Having recorded the longstanding tenuousness and unpopularity of the solictor's position in history, Mr Christian is able to settle happily into the conclusion that ‘the right of representation by solicitor has been constantly extended, until it seems alien to our ideas that in any circumstance a man should not be entitled to be so assisted'.
